Summer of Adventure

Scouting adventure doesn't end when school's out!  Come join the pack for these summer events.

Scouts can log their participation in these events in ScoutBook toward earning the National Summertime Pack Award pin.  They can earn it each summer by participating in an event in June, July, and August.  Since our summer break start in May, your scout can count the Fishing Derby on May 28 in place of one of the other months as necessary.

Attending the Mountain View Day Camp in June or resident camp at Camp Nicol sometime this summer will put your scout on the path to earning the Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award.  In addition to attending day camp or resident camp, scouts need to complete a particular outdoor adventure with their den, as well as participating in some other outdoor experiences.

Make sure to log your hiking in ScoutBook, also.  The pack gives patches to scouts who reach 5, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, ... miles, and we're now exporting the information from ScoutBook.  It will be fun to see how many miles some of our scouts rack up over their active summer months.

Pack Graduation & Picnic - 
Join us to celebrate a great year of scouting!
When: Saturday, May 14, 10:30 AM - 1:30 PM
Where: Willow Farm Park (AKA the Red Barn Park), 901 S. Fordham St. Longmont, CO 80503
Uniform: Boys should come in their blue or tan uniform, wearing their current rank neckerchief.  They'll receive a neckerchief for their new level as we promote them to the next den level during the ceremonies.

We'll be watching the forecast and communicate any weather-related changes if necessary as the date draws closer.  So far it looks promising.

  • Opening - Flag/oath/law ceremony at 10:30 AM
  • Prayer, Welcome, and Leader Recognition
  • Craft - Make neckerchief slides
  • Cubmaster Minute - A Scout is Kind
  • Tiger to Wolf
  • Wolf to Bear
  • Activity - Kind Scout Race

  • Lawn chairs for family members - scouts can sit with their den groups in the grass

  • Food to share for the picnic (pick one if you have multiple scouts):

    • Bear/Webelos - Fruit or Vegetable
The pack will provide the following for the picnic lunch:
  • Sub Sandwiches
  • Plates/Plasticware/Napkins/Cups
  • Drinks - Water and Lemonade
Food service will be set up in the barn shelter, and your picnic items can be dropped off there before the meeting if desired.  Keep in mind the timing of the lunch after the ceremonies, so coolers may be needed for some items depending on the weather.

Following the program and lunch, many boys may want to play in the trees or the stream that runs through the park.  It can be a lot of fun, but be prepared if you plan to let your boys participate.  It may be wise to bring a change of clothes (play shirt under their uniform shirt would work) and a towel.  With that much boy (and sibling) energy concentrated in one area, we'll need to work together to supervise the fun.

District Pinewood Derby

Ishaan placed first, beating all the Tigers across Mountain View and Indian Peaks districts.
Kevin and Clayton had strong results in tough Wolf and Bear races.
Alec and Gabriel both placed second in their Webelos and AOL races.

Based on their top 2 finishes in the rank races, Ishaan, Alec, and Gabriel qualified for the overall district finals.  Gabriel came in 2nd of all the cars from all ranks.  Ishaan and Alec finished just off the podium in 4th and 5th place overall.

Thanks, boys, for representing our pack at the district race, and congratulations on the outstanding results!

It's been a while since we held our derby, and now all the area packs have completed their races, also.  The best cars from each rank will be racing against one another at the District Pinewood Derby on Saturday, May 7 at Calvary Bible Church, 615 Evans St. in Erie.  We can cheer our best on as they compete against the best cars from the whole district:

Tiger - Ishaan B.
Wolf - Kevin T.
Bear - Clayton V.
Webelos - Alexander J.
AOL - Gabriel M.

Everyone else is also invited to enter their car in a special open race this year, also.  Each car entered costs $5 to cover the insurance, patch, and other event costs (Pack pays for our winning cars).  There will be races for scouts, siblings, and adults held at the same event.  See the flyers below for details on this fun event for the whole family...

It is best to check in cars the night before if possible.  I'll be bringing our winning cars with me when I setup our pack's track for the race.  Check-in time is 6-8PM.  Parents of the winning racers, please let me know if you can come during that time to add graphite and deal with any issues during checking (fluctuation of weight, wheels no longer touching, etc.).  If not, please let me know if you'd like me to handle that for your son or if you want to deputize someone else.  It would be great to know what time you'd plan to be there, also, as I'll make sure to stay until you're all checked in, even we already have the track is setup and running.

Pack Campfire and Campout

Pack Campfire and Campout
When: Friday, April 22 (See times below)
Uniforms:  Scouts can come in their uniforms or pack T-shirts, or anything comfortable for the campfire and campout.
Monthly Theme: Cheerful - A Scout looks for the bright side of life. He cheerfully does tasks that come his way. He tries to make others happy.

All scouts and their families are invited to our campfire.  It will be a great way to practice our theme for the month of being Cheerful scouts.  There will be some group songs and stunts prepared.  Dens can share something, and individual scouts, leaders, and parents can also bring jokes, songs, stories, etc., to share.  Let me know if you or your scout have something to share so I can make sure we include you in the campfire program.

All but our youngest scouts have a requirement to participate in a family, den, or pack overnight event, and this campout will be a great way to meet that requirement if your scout hasn't done that yet.  If the weather cooperates, we should have the ability to allow any family that wants to join in the campout.  If we have to move inside for the campout due to threatening weather, we'll need to prioritize the scouts who need the overnighter to meet a requirement.  Each scout staying overnight must have a parent stay with them and a tent that accommodates the parent and scout.  We'll have convenient access to the bathrooms in the church fellowship building during the campout.

If you want to participate in the overnighter, we need you to RSVP to by Wednesday April 20.  Please send me the names of the scout and parent staying overnight, and let me know whether this event is needed to meet a rank advancement requirement for your scout.  Each parent and scout staying overnight will need a health form on file and need to turn in a signed consent form.  We'll bring the health forms the pack already has, as well as some blank forms and the simple consent forms, also.



5:30-6:45 PM - Arrival and tent setup for any families registered to stay overnight.
6:45-7:00 PM - Arrival for those just joining the campfire; fire setup and gathering.
7:00-7:45 PM - Campfire fun: jokes, skits, songs, stories, stunts
7:45-8:15 PM - S'mores, enjoy the campfire, say goodnight to those not staying overnight
8:15-9:30 PM - Parent-supervised fun, prepare for sleep, retire to tents
9:30 PM         - All quiet

Morning         - Breakfast (bring your own if desired), break camp and head home
9:00 AM         - Camp closes

For the Campfire Bring:
  • Flashlight
  • Seating (camp chair, lawn chair) for scouts and family members.  Scouts will sit by dens close to the fire ring with families surrounding the scouts.
  • Depending on the weather forecast, you may want a blanket or other way to keep warm during the program.
  • Joke, poem, or story to share, or a favorite song to teach the group.  If you let me know in advance, I'll make sure you're on the program.
For the Campout Bring:
  • Tent
  • Sleeping bags, mats, cots, etc.
  • Change of clothes, toiletries, etc.
  • No-cook breakfast items as desired

March Pack Meeting - Blue & Gold

Our March pack meeting is special!  It is our annual Blue and Gold gathering.

Come celebrate scouting and honor our Arrow of Light Den members as they complete their Cub Scout journeys and many transition to Boy Scout troops.  We'll have Boy Scout Order of the Arrow (OA) members leading a crossover ceremony and enjoy cake together.

Scouts should come in their blue uniforms.

One-hour shifts at 4:30 PM, 5:30 PM, and 6:30 PM - Sign up here.

Please have boys come in their uniform to serve, and plan to arrive a few minutes before their shift starts.

Winter Fun Day at Camp Tahosa - Saturday, February 20, 2016

Greg Louie and his team have been doing a great job getting organized for our big outdoor winter fun day!

We'll be returning to Camp Tahosa, a Boy Scout property near Ward, CO for a day of winter adventure.
This is an event for the whole family, and the pack is able to pay for everything out of the proceeds of our fall popcorn sale!

  • Broomball (Bring your brooms and helmets.  More detail than you need for making your stick: here)
  • Snowshoe (Bring your snowshoes)
  • Campfire Warming Station
  • Cocoa
  • Lodge w/ Games and Crafts (Bring your games.)
  • Lunch, Snacks, and Patch Included

Everyone who attends needs a health form on file with the pack or brought to the event (there is a link in the flyer).
Sledding, broomball, skating, etc., require a helmet (bike helmet or similar is fine) per BSA safety guidelines.

Scout Sunday is a longstanding tradition in scouting.  Each year it is observed on the Sunday on or before the birthday of scouting.  This year it falls on February 7 (also Super Bowl Sunday).

Our pack's chartering organization is a church, Hygiene United Methodist Church.  The church invites our pack to lead a flag ceremony in their worship service on Scout Sunday.  We use the event as an opportunity to thank the church for their generous support and the use of their facilities throughout the year.

Pinewood Derby - February 5-6, 2016

Check-In: Friday, February 5, 7-8:30 PM, Hygiene United Methodist Church
   Cars will be inspected and judged for craftsmanship at several stations:
      Standard Kit Used
      Weight <= 5 oz.
      Wheels Unmodified
      4 Wheels Roll
      No loose accessories
   Take a picture of your scout (or sibling) with his (or her) car in front of the track!

   A car adjustment station will be provided with a small sampling of tools in case minor repairs or weight adjustments are needed.
   Bring your graphite for a last minute wheel lubrication if desired.  A box over a tarp will contain the mess.

Race-Day: Saturday, February 6, 8 AM-2 PM, Hygiene United Methodist Church
   Expected schedule (Please be flexible if we have race-day challenges!):
