Scouting for Food 2015Our November theme is, "A Scout is Helpful", and we talked about doing 'good turns' at the pack meeting.  As a pack we'll be doing a good turn for our community through the Scouting for Food program.  Read on for the details about how you and your scout can help strengthen a vital community food bank through this neighborhood food drive.  The main details are:

Door Hanger Distribution

Meet at Blue Skies Park (1520 Mountain Dr, Longmont, CO 80503)

Saturday, November 14 @ 10 AM

Come in uniform!

Food Collection & Delivery

Meet at Blue Skies Park (1520 Mountain Dr, Longmont, CO 80503)

Saturday, November 21 @ 9 AM

Come in uniform!  Bring wagons and let us know if you can bring a pickup or trailer.  Post-collection delivery details are still TBD.

It will help us organize our effort if we know in advance that you plan to help out with either of both parts of the project, so please email me to let me know if you can.  Scouts who help with either part will receive a Scouting for Food patch after we turn in our pack report.

Through our Scouting for Food campaign, we'll be inviting an entire neighborhood to donate much needed food supplies and then collecting them the following week.  The invitation will be in the form of door hangers that we'll place on the doors of all the homes in the neighborhood around Blue Mountain Elementary and Blue Skies Park (where we held the August pack meeting and launched water rockets).  The map below shows the neighborhood we'll cover, with more than 300 homes.

We'll meet at the shelter at Blue Skies Park at 10 AM on Saturday, November 14 to distribute the door hangers.  Tony Hunt will have maps with assignments highlighted so there is no overlap.  Teams of 2-4 scouts with parents will fan out and cover a section or two of our total area.  If the forecast holds it should be good outdoor fun.  With several scouts leap-frogging each other to go to several doors at the same time along a street, you can cover ground fairly quickly.  Most teams should finish up within an hour or so.

The following Saturday, November 21, we'll return to collect donations that people have set on their doorsteps, once again meeting at Blue Skies park to get organized.  We'll begin collection at 9 AM and work to complete it in a couple of hours.  We'll work in teams pulling wagons or move vehicles through the neighborhoods to collect the bags of items.  We'll bring the items back to the park to pickups or trailers that can be used to transport the food to the OUR Center.  We hope to deliver our collections at the same time as other area Cub Scout packs and Boy Scout troops, likely in the early afternoon.  Scouts and their families may have the opportunity to tour the OUR Center and hear about their work in our community.  We'll share those details when we have them.
